Delta Air Lines has placed its first direct order with Boeing for up to 60 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, marking a major step in modernising its wide‑body fleet and supporting long‑haul international expansion. The agreement consists of a firm order for 30 Boeing 787‑10 aircraft — the largest variant of the Dreamliner family — with options for up to 30 more. These jets are expected to serve high‑demand transatlantic and South American routes as part of Delta’s growth plans through the next decade.
Delta’s Chief Executive Officer, Ed Bastian, said that “Delta is building the fleet for the future, enhancing the customer experience, driving operational improvements and providing steady replacements for less efficient, older aircraft in the decade to come. Most importantly, these aircraft will be operated by the best aviation professionals in the industry, providing Delta’s welcoming, elevated and caring service to travelers worldwide.”
The Boeing 787‑10, capable of seating up to 336 passengers and offering approximately 25 % lower fuel use per seat compared with the aircraft it replaces, brings both operational efficiency and passenger comfort improvements. Dreamliner features such as the largest windows of any wide‑body aircraft flying today and improved cabin pressurisation aim to help customers arrive feeling more refreshed.
Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, commented on the partnership, noting that “we are excited that Delta Air Lines has selected the 787‑10 to join its fleet of the future. Our team looks forward to delivering new Dreamliners to Delta and supporting their commitments to provide an exceptional passenger experience and advance sustainability in aviation.”
This purchase also strengthens Delta’s long‑standing relationship with Boeing, adding to a fleet that already includes over 460 Boeing aircraft across single‑aisle and wide‑body types. With this order, Delta’s Boeing order book grows to 130 planes, including previous commitments for 100 Boeing 737‑10 jets.
The Dreamliners are slated for delivery beginning in 2031, as Delta continues to refresh its international fleet strategy, replace older models such as Boeing 767s, and expand its reach into key global markets.
